Today, one of the most important sources of air pollution is increasing vehicle traffic due to increasing population in the developed and developing countries. The transport sector is responsible for considerable amount of local pollutants (NOx, PM, CO, HC) and global pollutants (CO2) that directly and indirectly effect humans, buildings, atmosphere, and ecosystems. Pollution caused by transport is especially burdensome in urban areas because of the combined presence of a large number of pollution sources.
The effects on health due to transport-related air pollution which is estimated to be reason for about 2 million worldwide premature death per year are among the leading concerns about transport in the city. Many technical and non-technical measures were developed for decreasing of these adverse health effects. Hybrid system for urban transport is one of the important and effective methods. Hybrid buses are becoming remedy for today's important vehicle problems as emission, noise and fuel economy. Hybrid buses are quieter, cleaner and use less fuel. Due to their beneficial effect on environment, hybrid vehicles are an important factor for the improvement of urban traffic and for a wholesome surroundings while conventional buses are still exhibit high vehicle emission levels and fuel consumption at especially congested traffic of present day.
Hybrid-electric buses, like conventional buses, are used on a wide variety of alternative fuels. The long-term benefit of hybrid-electric technology is ensuring efficient electric drive that allows for the capture of braking energy, electric motors, low emissions and battery storage.
